If you've been reading my blog, you'd know I've been lusting over some high waisted and destroyed denim shorts. I haven't found one that I'm in love with yet, so I wandered over to youtube to check out some DIY projects. It turns out, almost EVERYONE had the same idea: DIY denim shorts. After watching a few videos, it's crazy how anyone even goes out to buy these shorts when they're so easy to create yourself. BTW, this was my FIRST try so be kind!
First stop: find high waisted jeans, preferably a light wash and not too tight. I actually asked my mom if she had any old jeans she'd like to get rid of, and turns out, my mom's kind of a hoarder. She had these lookers from who knows when. I can't imagine anyone wearing these today...
Second: Cut them to shorts length! I would recommend wearing them first and measuring. Remember: cut at a diagonal so that it's shorter on the outside and longer near the crotch area. It's more flattering that way!
Third: Destroy them! Using a sharp scissor (be careful not to cut yourself!) and destroy your shorts! There are lots of good youtube videos on this. Here's a very informative video on destroying your denim
Fourth: Once you've gotten your jeans to your desired style and length, bleach them! They need to be white in order to soak up the dye in the color you want. Since I was going for a bright pink, I wanted my jeans to be pretty white. I bleached them overnight and then washed out all the bleach
Fifth: Dye your shorts! Here's the video I followed to do it: Ombre Dip Dye Denim Shorts
Ok, so mine didn't turn out as ombre-d as I had hoped, but it's definitely a nice bright pink that's a lot more wearable than it was before. I'll definitely put this in an OOTD soon!
